Safety & Compliance
Safety and caution are at the heart of our operations to avoid incidents and accidents before they happen. The respect of standards, laws and regulations is part of our values.
The security measures in effect consist of:
- Training employees in safety and emergency measures and promoting a safety culture among our employees, partners and customers
- the implementation of an emergency measures plan
- the production of an industrial accident consequence study
- the execution of exercises and simulations in case of emergency
- regular inspection and maintenance of equipment and buildings
- camera surveillance of the site and night lighting
- work procedures for employees
- lockdown of critical areas and equipment when not in use
- auditing for compliance with safety standards
A ‘’major’’ industrial accident is an unexpected and sudden event, occurring in an establishment or an industrial site, and which consequences go beyond the limits of the site.
Thus, not all industrial accidents are major as the consequences do not go beyond the perimeter of the site. The nature and quantity of the products involved determine the potential impacts on humans and the environment.

As a preventive measure, we wish to inform the population of the risks associated with a major industrial accident that would involve [CAN-27 and AXAN ]
[CAN-27]
CALCIUM AMMONIUM NITRATE
CAN 27 is a fertilizer that contains ammonium nitrate and calcium carbonate (like limestone) as essential ingredients. The granular product has a brownish color and is odorless. The dry product is stored in solid state in bulk bins.
CAN 27 is not specifically listed as an explosive or hazardous substance in the Environmental Emergency Regulations. This product was developed by the company YARA to avoid the risks of explosion associated with ammonium nitrate.
Risks associated with calcium ammonium nitrate
In its normal state of use (dry granules), the product has no known significant effects or critical hazards if it comes into contact with the eyes or skin, or if it is ingested.
During decomposition by fire, calcium ammonium nitrate may pose health risks. Inhalation of calcium ammonium nitrate may impair respiratory condition. Delayed symptoms may occur.
If an accident occurred, what would be the consequences?
Despite the fact that safety measures are in place, a study conducted by a specialized engineer has indicated that the consequences of an accident under specific circumstances would be the release of toxic fumes. This event could have serious health impacts outside the property limits of the Agromart facility.
[AXAN]
Ammonitrate – Calcium Sulfate
AXAN is a fertilizer that contains ammonium nitrate and calcium sulfate as essential ingredients. The granular product has a greyish white color and is odorless. The dry product is stored in solid state in bulk bins.
AXAN is not specifically listed as an explosive or hazardous substance in the Environmental Emergency Regulations. This product was developed by the company YARA to avoid the risks of explosion associated with ammonium nitrate while providing sulphur to crops.

Accident
Scenario
The accident scenario that would most likely trigger emergency measures was modeled in order to prepare an adequate plan. Scenarios that are unlikely to occur were not modeled.
The accident scenario for the Scotland AGROMART facility is a fire covering 10% of the of the exposed surface of two piles of 300 metric tons each of CAN and/or AXAN. For such an event, the radius of impact reaches 1.2 (CAN) and 1.5 (AXAN) kilometers. This is the scenario to be used for emergency planning.
How to react in case of a
Major Industrial Accident?
Ontario Alert will notify the area with the alert and further instructions
